International Conventions

1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (The Hague Convention) -- the first comprehensive international agreement on the protection of cultural property.
1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property -- concerned with protection through prevention of export from the source country and import into other countries, Article 9 allows states whose cultural patrimony is in jeopardy from pillage or looting to call on the other state parties to make a concerted international effort to control exports, imports, and trade in the objects subject to pillage.

Signatories of the 1970 UNESCO Convention -- as of March 2004, 103 countries had ratified the 1970 UNESCO Convention.

UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage -- seeks to establish international cooperation for conservation of world heritage sites, .primarily with monuments, buildings, and archaeological sites.

Multilateral and Bilateral Agreements

European Union Directive on the Return of Cultural Objects -- seeks the return of national treasures of artistic, historic or archaeological value that have been unlawfully removed from the territory of a Member State [of the European Union] once controls have been abolished at internal frontiers.
European Union Regulation on the Export of Cultural Goods (Council Regulation No. 3911/92) -- ensures that exports of cultural goods are subject to uniform controls at the community's external borders.
