Who is the SIT-Educated Language Teacher?

At SIT, we believe that communication is fundamental to global understanding. Only through language facility and cultural sensitivity will the peoples of the world be able to resolve the differences that hinder the growth of democracy, social justice, and economic development. Teachers of language must be thoughtful and informed practitioners, grounded in prevailing theory and fully aware of the everchanging realities of their teaching situations and the diverse needs and experiences of their students.

The quality that most distinguishes SIT-trained language teachers from all others is their ability to create a dynamic and communicative learning environment that maximizes the learning proficiency of each student. SIT has built a professional community of teachers who are:

  • skilled in learning through the experience of teaching and interacting with others in the profession,
  • committed to the ongoing development of their expertise as language teachers,
  • advocates on behalf of language learning and language teachers, and
  • actively engaged in building multicultural and multilinguistic awareness.

Graduates of SIT's MAT program continue their interaction long after the on-campus segment of their SIT experience is over.

Finally, SIT MAT graduates are among the most soughtafter and satisfied professionals in their field. In 2000, SIT conducted research and discovered that SIT-trained teachers, administrators, teacher trainers and researchers remain in the field, on average, significantly longer than those who have earned MAT degrees from other institutions.

SIT prides itself in offering more than a top-notch education. It fosters a strong professional community, strong sense of purpose, and the skills and commitment necessary to achieve results in any school or classroom anywhere in the world.
