Mission Statement

Wakatobi was set up with a mission to establish a win-win situation for the reefs, the resort and the local community through sound eco-tourism conforming to sustainable tourism principles:

Informing both the visitor and the local communities
You'll learn about the destination and how to help sustain its character while deepening your own travel experiences. Locals learn that the ordinary and familiar to them may be of interest and value to you!

Supporting the integrity of the place
Discerning travellers like you seek out businesses that emphasize the character of the locale in terms of heritage, ecology, environment, architecture and aesthetics. Tourism revenues in turn raise local perceived value of those assets.

Benefiting the local communities
Travel businesses do their best to employ and train local Wakatobi people, buy local supplies and use local services.

Conserving resources
Environmentally aware travellers favour businesses that minimise pollution, waste, energy consumption, water usage and unnecessary night time lighting.

Respecting local culture and tradition
Foreign visitors learn about and observe local etiquette, including using a few words in the local language. Residents learn how to deal with foreign expectations and mind sets that may differ from their own.

Abuse-free products
Shareholders anticipate development pressures and apply limits and management techniques to promote sustainability. Businesses cooperate to protect natural habitats, heritage sites, scenic appeal and local culture.

Providing great trips
Satisfied and excited diving visitors to Wakatobi take new knowledge home and send friends off to share their experience, which provides continuing benefits for the destination.

Tangible benefits for the Wakatobi community
A revolutionary reef lease project is already established with over 10 km of Wakatobi coral reef fully protected. This generates immediate economic benefits to the local community and increases their understanding of the long-term value of these fantastic reefs.

Sustainable Diving in Wakatobi

Wakatobi lives the belief that protecting the reefs is an integral part of running a sustainable dive resort operation. Divers coming to enjoy the reefs, propel our reef conservation efforts around Wakatobi.

The Wakatobi Collaborative Reef Conservation Programme aligns the interests of the locals and the diving community. Local fishing communities obtain a fair share of the income generated by dive tourism in exchange for adopting more sustainable practices, such as leaving large stretches of reef completely untouched, and the surrounding villages receive financial incentives to improve their infrastructure. Other contributions go towards education and strengthening local support for the marine park.

Here agreements are reached among fully consenting peers without the need to preach or apply pressure. The local communities become defenders of these precious underwater properties, a valued source of cash flow for them. You, the diver can join us at Wakatobi and enjoy many miles of the finest reefs on the planet with a good conscience.
