Choosing fishing rods used to be a pretty
simple matter. Kids and adults who occasionally fished used cane poles or a
cheap Zebco rod and reel combo (or maybe a Pocket Fisherman...remember those?).
The serious fishermen used the more exotic models made of fiberglass or graphite.
That was then. Nowadays, fishing rods at every level employ the latest materials
and designs. There are three basic styles of freshwater rod: casting, spinning,
and fly. Here are some details and recommendations for each...
Fishing Rods: Casting
Casting fishing rods are designed to hold
spincasting or baitcasting reels, both of which mount to the rod on the top,
where your thumb can engage the reel's release. Most fishermen who use this
design like models with forefinger triggers (pistol grips), which prevent
slippage. Another aspect to keep in mind is the material used in the grip. Some
anglers prefer foam, others cork, and some like a harder plastic style. It's a
personal preference for each fisherman.
One of our favorite casting fishing rods is
the Shakespeare Ugly Stik
(6' or 6'6" models) from MVP Sports.

Fishing Rods: Spinning
Spinning fishing rods are designed to hold
spinning reels, which mount on the underside of the rod. Pistol grip triggers are
not included on this kind of pole. They also differ from casting rods in that the
guides run along the bottom, in keeping with the flow of line coming from the
reel. Finally, an important consideration here is balance. The grip on a well-made
model is designed to counter the overall length of the rod, creating a comfortable
feel, regardless of the weight of the reel you're using.
In this category, we highly recommend

Fishing Rods: Fly
Fly fishing rods are often just like everything
else associated with flyfishing tackle - expensive! However, it's an understandable
expense, because these are some of the most painstakingly crafted angling products
manufactured today. Ask any fly fisherman and he'll tell you that when they find a
rod they like, they take extremely good care of it. Having said that, if you look
around diligently enough, you can find deals on well-made poles.
