New Year's Eve 2005

Untitled Document New York may be a Big Apple. Los Angeles may be a City of Angels. But no place throws a party like Las Vegas. When New Year's Eve rolls around, Sin City shows why it's the most exciting city on Earth, and this year it gets even better.

About the Centennial

Officially established by a railroad town-site auction in 1905, Las Vegas will enter the century club when the city celebrates its 100th birthday on May 15, 2005. Over its 10 decades of existence, Las Vegas has established a legacy of growth, reinvention, and a thriving creative culture that have made it the first city of the 21st century.

Throughout 2005, the city will roll out a red carpet (sequin-studded, of course) to invite visitors and residents alike to experience and explore all the myriad elements fit to be found in Las Vegas, reflecting both the city's birth, historic growth, and reputation as being a world-renowned playground for kids of all ages.

A Glimpse at History

The Centennial event calendar is filled with numerous commemorative events that will shine the spotlight on the historic side of Las Vegas, including a time capsule, a centennial quilt, public art projects, original theatrical productions, restoration and rededication of historic places, markers placed at locations of famous community-shaping moments, and much more.

A Yearlong Celebration for the Ages

With all that history to recognize, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate, and plenty of opportunities for revelry. Entertainment events planned for the Centennial include a gala ball, film festival, 100 weddings to mark 100 years, an attempt to bake a world record-setting birthday cake, and a weekend-long birthday party highlighted by the rollicking Helldorado Parade, a longtime city tradition. Of course, it all starts with a city-rocking Centennial kick-off on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve in Las Vegas

On New Year's Eve, the majority of the Strip closes to automobile traffic at 5:00 PM. The blockade, from Russell to Sahara, covers all hotels from Mandalay Bay at the Strip's southern end to Stratosphere at the north. The Strip transforms into a giant block party as roughly 400,000 people gather to eat, drink, and be merry. It's a celebration like no other, so don't miss it!

Getting the Party Started

To ring in the new year, the majority of Las Vegas hotels plan lavish celebrations complete with live music or DJs, party favors, and champagne toasts. Some hotels will even schedule multiple parties, each one designed to fit the theme of the club, restaurant, or ballroom where the soirée will occur. Once again, it pays to do your homework and plan ahead. Don't be left out in the cold.

The Best Views

Each year, the party is capped by fireworks that blanket the midnight sky. Here are some of the best places to be when the show starts:

  • In front of the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. This vantage point allows a clear view all the way to the north and south ends of the Strip.
  • The observation deck at the Stratosphere. The Stratosphere offers amazing views from atop the tower.
  • Fremont Street Experience. Fremont Street offers its own fireworks display, coinciding with a dance-party light show.
  • The Las Vegas Hilton. The Hilton takes full advantage of its location by giving paying partygoers a panoramic skyline view.

What's Different This Year?

One Las Vegas Centennial planner described the Las Vegas New Year's Eve and Centennial kick-off as the "usual festivities on steroids." Prepare yourself for an entertaining display that's bigger, bolder, and more eye-popping than ever.

Along with the show-stopping midnight flourish of fireworks, the Centennial kick-off will feature a historical video projected from hotels and casinos, a soundtrack written just for the event by Clint Holmes—one of the premier singers on the Strip—and performed by other notable entertainers, and more than 200 light cannons that will bathe both the Strip and downtown in multi-colored megawatt glee.

Be Part of a Once-In-A-Lifetime Event

Each year, we're all after the most memorable way to spend our New Year's Eve. This December, forget the New Year—here in Las Vegas we've got ourselves a new century, and the party promises to be a true once-in-a-lifetime event.

Be part of history by booking your room, shows, tours, and more, right here at LasVegas.com. Don't wait! A chance like this won't come around again for another hundred years.
