Goals of the ELF Program

The English Language Fellow Program

General Information

Fellowships are NOT volunteer positions. Please see How to Apply for remuneration specifics.

All Fellowships are 10 months in duration.

All Fellows must be United States Citizens.

All Junior Fellows must have received a MA TESOL within the last 5 years.

All Senior Fellows must have a MA TESOL (or closely related degree), and teacher-training experience and/or materials development experience.

Most student loan companies allow deferments for EL Fellows (check with your loan company.)

The English Language Fellow Program (ELF) is a dynamic and exciting program, offering a life changing opportunity for recent MA TESOL grads and experienced US English language teachers and trainers. During the 2004-2005 academic year, there are 112 Fellows serving in 64 countries. Their duties range from classroom teaching to designing English Language textbooks for entire countries. English Language Fellows use their skills and training to serve the world community while gaining valuable real-world experience.

The ELF program is designed to improve the English Language teaching capability in selected institutions around the world. Fellows work with universities, American Language Centers, the United Nations, National Ministries of Education and other organizations involved in English Language instruction to foster the goals of the ELF program.

By contributing to the improvement of English language teaching, the English Language Fellow Program aids U.S. embassies throughout the world in their goals of facilitating democratic institution building and encouraging participation in the global economy. If you qualify and want to live abroad while gaining valuable professional experience and helping foster a positive and peaceful world community, please apply to the English Language Fellow Program.

English Language Fellowships are funded by the Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the School For International Training.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2005-2006 Academic Year.

The English Language Fellow Program is an excellent opportunity for both new and veteran Master's level English language teachers to not only serve the growing needs for English in countries around the world but also to further their own professional development. I gained confidence as a teacher, discovered my skills as a trainer, and deepened my understanding of working across cultures.
