Bush Establishes Military Awards for Afghan and Iraqi Campaigns 

 

Awards will be offered in lieu of War on Terror Medals

 

President Bush has authorized the creation of Afghanistan and Iraq campaign medals to recognize U.S. military forces who have served in those two wars. In a November 29 executive order, Bush declared that members of the military who have served in either Afghanistan or Iraq are eligible for one of the two awards in lieu of the previously established Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Afghan Women Teachers Meet First Lady Laura Bush

 

Washington -- A meeting with first lady Laura Bush was the highlight of a trip to Washington by a group of women schoolteachers from Afghanistan.

 

"She is a teacher and has done a lot for Afghan women. We can relate to her," Nazeefah Shareefi said in a November 11 interview with the Washington File. Others in her group of 12 women teachers, who toured the White House and had photos taken with the first lady both in a group and individually, were impressed at "how simple and direct" Laura Bush was. She was "friendly and kind," observed Zuhal Nizaam, another teacher.

Bush Nominates Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State

President also nominates Stephen Hadley as national security advisor

President George W. Bush nominated Condoleezza Rice to be U.S. secretary of state. Asserting the secretary of state is "America's face to the world," Bush said that Rice will show the "strength, grace, and decency of our country." The Senate must confirm Rice before she can assume the office of secretary of state.
