Fiber art has been part of my life since childhood. Introduced to the magic of fabric by my grandmother, who did amazing crochet, artful fabric collage, and a myriad of other projects using fabric from all over the world, my interest was kindled. I studied batik in Jogyakarta, Indonesia, and spent many years exploring that medium.
Following a trip to the South Pacific seven years ago, I learned the current method of hand printed design on cloth, called "holiography". This process takes the artist into the rain forest, where ferns, foliage, and flowers are collected then pressed in preparation for printing. Each item of clothing is then hand dyed with special photosensitive paints, the leaves and ferns are artfully placed on the fabric while it is wet with colour. Generally this work is done outdoors, during sunny weather, the ultraviolet and heat from the sunshine kick in the colours. Leaves and flowers are carefully removed, then the cloth is heat treated in a special machine, making it colour fast and machine washable. The intricate veins and detail that is so present in mother nature, is captured and colourfully presented on fabric as "wearable art".
Aside from a great variety of clothing, including woman's and children's dresses, mens cotton tailored shirts, I also do handprinted yardage, tablecloths, duvet covers and fabric for uphostery. The dyes are applied in many ways either using specially designed dipping tanks, or sponges, brushes and spray bottles. I am also currently exploring methods of folding and tying the fabric to get greater texture, making even more varied backdrops of colour, to offset the floral detail.
My work Seahorse Productions is currently displayed at "Out of the Blue" both on Bowen Island and in Gibsons, BC, at Mulberry Lane, in Williams Lake, BC, Perkins Bakery, Vale Perkins, Que, Explore on Quadra Island BC, and Blue Moon Gifts, in Coombs BC.
