Bali / Lombok Restaurants
This page is dedicated to good, even great places
for Indonesian food. All the restaurants listed have been visited
and recommended by forum users. Restaurants specialising solely
in foods from other countries have been omitted ("When
in Rome do as the Romans do" and all that).
When you are eating in Bali, it will pay you to
read the Health & Safety
page of this forum. Not only does it give you advice about how
to avoid the infamous "Bali Belly", but also some
sound advice on avoiding some of the chemicals (e.g., MSG and
food colours) that many restaurateurs add to their food. Chemicals
that may well have been banned, for good reason, in your own
country!
Also, be advised "fresh" fish restaurants
that sell by weight may well have "faulty scales"
(favouring the restaurant of course) or fish that appear to
have somehow eaten lead weights. If the extra cost does not
put you off, the chance of lead poisoning may (choose your fresh
fish restaurant with great care).

Kuta restaurants:
Ketupat, Jl Legian
Wonderful surroundings and recipes from all over the Indonesian archipelago.
All the items on their menu have a corresponding photo, so you know what
you are getting yourself into. Western and Japanese style tables / seating.
Expect to pay around 80,000 Rp per person for a really decent spread.
Aromas, Jl Legian
The perfect place for lunch to escape the relentless bustle and hustle
(security guard present) of Kuta's main road. An exquisite range of food
and freshly squeezed juices; also many vegetarian dishes. The rear section
is set in lush gardens with a stream and the staff glide gracefully around
- a surreal experience after Jl Legian! Expect to pay 40,000 to 50,000
Rp for a reasonable sized lunch; more for dinner.
Rama Bridge, Jl Bakung Sari (Part of / at
the entrance to the Ramayana
Hotel)
Very pleasant surroundings, especially by the pond. Great range of quality
food; very good fish. Sometimes let down by singers performing western
music covers (go early to avoid). Expect to pay 70,000 to 80,000 Rp per
person.
Jimbaran Bay restaurants:
La Indonesia, Jl Ulu Watu (300 meters South
of Hotel Intercontinental)
Award winning restaurant. Expect to pay 80,000 Rp per person for a reasonable
spread.
Beach-side Seafood Restaurants, Jimbaran Bay Beach
Range of small outdoor seafood restaurants. Ceria Cafe and Yomans possibly
the best. You can eat really inexpensively here if you avoid the lobster.
However, first read the seafood warning on the health
& safety page.
Tanjung Benoa restaurants:
Bumbu Bali Restaurant, Award winning Balinese
Fare restaurant with their own web site - Click
To Visit.
Seminyak restaurants:
Made's Warung, Jl Raya Seminyak
Institution amongst Indonesian restaurants here in Bali.
The Living Room, Seminyak
Candlelit grounds, selective easy listening music and haute cuisine make
this one of the most evocative and popular choices on the island. Although
mostly International fare, delights like Balinese frogs legs in basil
leaves (go on, try them) form part of a very impressive menu.
Ubud restaurants:
Murni's Warung, Campuhan Bridge
Built into the side of and overlooks the Wos river valley. Best restaurant
area is two flights of stairs down, which is surprisingly hardly ever
busy (people just don't realise it's down there). Excellent menu and superbly
prepared fresh foods, including their own special recipe tuna dish. Try
the incredible fresh squeezed juices. Expect to pay around 80,000 Rp for
a decent spread.
Casa Luna, Jl Raya
Right in the town centre, the frontage obscures the fact it is built on
the ridge of a small river valley. If you look, you will find a set of
stairs going down - go all the way. Two stories down, just like at Murni's,
is the best restaurant area overlooking the river valley. Beautiful marble
surrounds. Exceptional menu / food. Expect to pay around 80,000 Rp per
person for a full meal. They have a web-site.
Cafe Wayan, Monkey Forest Road
Very popular place which can get booked up well in advance, so it might
be worth booking ahead (361 975447). Quite expensive unless you stick
to the traditional Indonesian dishes.
Batan Waru, Jl Dewi Sita
New and very popular place with plenty of vegetarian options.
Pemuteran restaurants:
Taman Sari Hotel & Restaurant
Great beach front location (walk along the beach to get to it from
any of the 3 other hotels in this area). Candlelit dinners, with the gentle
lapping of the waves and distant bobbing of fishermen's kerosene lamps.
Very good range of fresh foods and the best? ice-cream on Bali. Very inexpensive
at around 50,000 Rp per person for a decent spread.
Lovina restaurants:
Kubu Lalang
The gem of the whole area. Next to the beach down a small access
road between the Bali Taman and Puri Bagus hotels in Anturan, Lovina.
Huge menu, freshest ingredients, no MSG, no artificial colours, freshly
squeezed juices, well selected music and low prices. Don't miss eating
here and do it soon (in case its inevitable popularity spoils it).
Warung Bambu
On the entrance road to Puri Bagus. This restaurant is exclusively
Indonesian (although they do serve French fries as well), and have frequent
dance performances. Deservedly popular and very inexpensive for what you
get. High quality food without MSG or artificial colourings. They also
run a complimentary pick you up / take you back service within the hotels
in Lovina.
Amed restaurants:
Wah Wah Wey Wey, Lipah / Amed Just South of Hidden
Paradise Cottages.
Open kitchen so you can see how clean and fresh everything is. Great fish,
including barracuda. Some Japanese style tables / seats. Expect to pay
around 70,000 Rp per person for something tasty and filling.
Also, you may want to visit the Bali
Eats website, it is their speciality!
