1. Maui Hiking Safaris: Choose from the many hikes offered by Maui Hiking Safaris (toll free: 1-888-HIKE W ME or 1-888- 445-3963). Hiking tours are led by the owner/guide lending a touch of personal service to the experience. The hikes are conducted in small groups with no more than 6 clients to a hike. Nakalele blow hole:This picnic spot has a blow hole, tide pools, lava formations and crashing surf. It's about a 1/2 mile hike to the blow hole. The island of Molokai can be seen across the channel. Take route 30 north from Lahaina. In about 45 minutes the road will become route 34 after the village of Honokahau. The jeep trail leads to a bluff overlooking the blow hole and the Coast Guard beacon. 3. Honolua Bay: You can either picnic at the bay and get some snorkeling in or at the bluff overlooking the bay where on days, when the surf is up, you can view the surfers. The island of Molokai can be seen across the channel. Take route 30 north from Lahaina for about 30 minutes. You'll most likely see cars parked on the side of the road helping you to identify Honolua Bay. A short walk will get you to the bay. If you continue for another half mile to some pineapple fields you'll come to the bluff. Make a left on the dirt road paralleling the bluff. This is the spot to view the surfers from above. 4. Iao Valley: The valley has a view of central Maui and the Iao Needle. It's very lush with the Iao river running through it. Take a swimsuit. From Lahaina it is about an hour drive. Go southeast on route 30 to Wailuku and left on route 32 to the end of the road. 5. Makena Beach: This wide and long South Maui beach has views of Molokini , Kahoolawe and upcountry. There are tide pools, swimming, snorkeling and volcanic formations. From Lahaina it is about and hour and a quarter drive. Take route 30 southeast, then right on route 31 until you pass the cinder cone named Puu Olai. Turn right until you come to the shoreline. 6. Baldwin Beach Park: This long stretch of a beach on Maui's North coast has views of upcountry, Haleakala and Molokai. This is by far the locals favorite beach. There are tide pools, swimming and snorkeling. From Lahaina it is an hour drive. Take route 30 southeast to route 380 heading towards the airport. Then take route 36 towards the town of Paia. Baldwin beach is a 1/2 mile before Paia. 7. Hookipa Beach Park: This beach is world renowned for its wind surfing. When the winds pick up at noon this is when you want to be around to watch the action. Surfers surf the right side breaks. Hookipa has views of Haleakala, upcountry and Molokai. There are tide pools and bluffs that you can watch everything from. Take route 30 southeast to route 380 heading towards the airport. Then take route 36 towards the town of Paia. Continue through Paia for about a mile and a half. 8. Keanae Peninsula: This area has a Hawaiian village where the residents grow their taro. There is also a missionary church here. On a clear day in the morning you can make out Koolau Gap above the village. From Lahaina it is about a two hour drive. Take route 30 southeast to route 380 heading towards the airport. Then take route 36 towards the town of Paia. Follow route 36 to Keanae village. You can park under the pandanus trees (some people think of them as pineapple trees as they have fruit that resemble pineapple). 9. Ulupalakua Winery: Historically this area had a sugar mill. It was owned by James Makee, a retired whaling captain. On the grounds you will find large Cook and Norfolk pines, camphor trees and the retail store where you can sample free wine. The views from here are unequaled: the islands of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai and Molokini can be seen along with the isthmus. From Lahaina it is about a two hour drive. Take route 30 southeast to route 380 heading towards the airport. Then take route 36 until you make a right at route 37 up towards Haleakala until you come to the junction where King Kekaulike High school is located. Just continue south through the traffic light for about 45 minutes until you get to the winery. 10. Haleakala National Park: There are a number of places to picnic here. After viewing the park and the summit area you can come back down to around 6500 feet elevation where you can picnic at Hosmer's Grove. It is located just inside of the toll booth which marks the entry to Haleakala National Park. Dr. Ralph Hosmer, the first Territorial Forester of Hawaii, planted many of the introduced stands of trees. From Lahaina it is about a two and a half hour drive. Take route 30 southeast to route 380 heading towards the airport. Then take route 36 until you make a right at route 37 up towards Haleakala until you come to the junction where King Kekaulike High school is located. Follow the signs up to Haleakala Park.
