The Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, headed by Assistant Secretary James A. Kelly, deals with U.S. foreign policy and U.S. relations with the countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell's Travel to Japan, People's Republic of China, and Republic of Korea
Secretary of State Colin L. Powell traveled to Japan, the People's Republic of China, and the Republic of Korea October 22-26. He held discussions with senior officials in the three countries on bilateral matters, regional security and stability, and issues such as the global war on terrorism, Iraq, North Korea, and the Six Party Talks. Travel to Japan
On October 12-13, Deputy Secretary Armitage visited Tokyo, Japan for policy discussions in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Yukio Takeuchi. He also had bilateral meetings with a range of Japanese government and public officials.

The 2004 International Religious Freedom report was released on September 15, 2004.  This annual report includes individual country chapters on the status of religious freedom worldwide; remarks by Secretary Powell, On-the-record briefing by Ambassador-at-Large John Hanford.
