Heavy rain affects Croatia | Issued on: Mon Dec 6th 2004
A series of heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting parts of Croatia since Sunday afternoon, leading to some abnormally high rainfall totals. The city of Split, situated on the Adriatic coast, had seen a total of 142mm of rainfall in the eighteen hours up to midday on Monday. This is 30mm more than would usually be expected to fall during the whole of December.

Some western parts of the United States have seen some wet, windy and rather cold weather just recently as a cold front moved in from the Pacific. The town of Yuma in Arizona, located in the far south close to the border with Mexico, recorded 15mm of rainfall in the six hours up to 6 o'clock on Monday morning, 2mm more than the 13mm that would ordinarily fall during the whole of a typical December.

Mild temperatures in eastern Scotland | Issued on: Mon Dec 6th 2004
The presence of brisk southwesterly winds and some relatively warm, moist air has led to mild temperatures across eastern parts of Scotland on Monday. Kinloss on the Moray Firth saw temperatures rise to 12.5 Celsius by midday on Monday, more than 5 degrees higher than the typical December maximum temperature of 7.2 Celsius.

Parts of Argentina experienced some very heavy rainfall on Monday, thanks to the development of a large area of thunderstorms. The town of Reconquista in the northeast of the country, around 300 miles northeast of the city of Cordoba, recorded 118mm of rainfall in the twelve hours up to midday on Monday. This is only a little short of the 125mm of rainfall that would usually be expected to fall during the whole of the month.

Mediterranean warmth |Issued on: Mon Dec 6th 2004
Pantelleria, a small island in the Sicilian Channel between Sicilly and Tunisia, has seen warmer than average conditions just recently. The minimum temperature fell no lower than 17.0 Celsius during Sunday night, well above the average minimum temperature value of 10.0 Celsius. Also, the maximum temperature during Sunday was 21.0 Celsius, around seven Celsius higher than the typical December maximum temperature value.
