Twenty-five years have elapsed since the U.S. hockey team made a Miracle and won an improbable gold medal by defeating the Russians at the Lake Placid Olympics. The 25th anniversary of the Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games is being commemorated with a series of special events and festivities from February 12, 2005 to February 27, 2005.
Some of the commemorative events will include:
- February 12, 2005 – Lighting of the Olympic Torch at the Opening Ceremonies stadium
- February 20, 2005 - Learn the basics of speed skating or jump into some fun races on the Olympic oval where Eric Heiden re-wrote history
- February 21, 2005 - The Verizon Sports Complex will host the “Mile a Minute” party, marking the occasion when East Germany’s four-man bobsled broke the mile-per-minute barrier. Visitors can even enter their own timed race (with a trained driver and brakeman, of course!)
- February 22, 2005 – Remember the day the Miracle happened in the Olympic Center when Team USA defeated USSR 4 to 3
- February 23, 2005 – Enjoy torch-light skiing and snowshoe tours at the Verizon Sports Complex Cross Country Center, and wine and cheese tasting, a bonfire and live music.
