Our Mission
The mission of the School for International Training
is to prepare students to be interculturally effective leaders, professionals,
and citizens. In so doing, SIT fosters a worldwide network of individuals
and organizations committed to responsible global citizenship. SIT fulfills
this mission with field-based academic study abroad programs for undergraduates
and degree and certificate programs for graduates and professionals.
Graduate Programs
Through an academic curriculum that incorporates
field-based practice, reflection and application, SIT prepares graduates
who are critical thinkers, effective communicators and compassionate
advocates with exceptional intercultural abilities and awareness.
prepares teachers to work effectively in classrooms
and schools by developing essential competencies in reflective, learner-centered
teaching. Concentrations: English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL),
French or Spanish.
- Academic Year—A
one-year format with a midprogram internship and opportunity for
US public school licensure. A midprogram internship is available
in one of several countries.
- Summer—A
two-summer format for working professionals, with an interim year
teaching practicum.
- Master of Arts in
Teaching French or Spanish in U.S. Public Schools—SIT
plans to launch a master's program designed specifically to prepare
teachers of French (beginning 2004) and Spanish (beginning 2005)
in US public schools.
prepares graduates with the leadership capabilities
and cross-cultural competencies required to work effectively in multicultural
environments and foster a more just and sustainable world.
prepares professionals for careers helping individuals
and communities reconcile intractable behaviors and create peace,
through positions with governments, academic institutions, nongovernmental
organizations, the media and the private sector.
prepares professionals for careers in study abroad,
international student services, international recruitment and student
advising. Optional concentrations: International Education Advising;
Educational Exchange Management.
prepares professionals for careers in multicultural
organization development, citizen capacity building and multinational
human resource development. Optional concentrations: Community Development
and Social Action Training; Human Resource Development and Training;
Diversity Leadership.
prepares professionals for careers with organizations
dedicated to an equitable sharing and sustainable use of the world’s
wealth and natural resources. Optional concentrations: Community Development
and Social Action Training; Development Management.
prepares professionals for leadership positions
with mission-driven institutions, including nonprofit organizations,
socially responsible businesses and other agencies.
is a unique self-designed degree for professionals
who have particular career development needs or who wish to explore
professional alternatives.
SIT offers a variety of programs for working professionals who wish
to enhance their careers and accelerate their professional development
through distance education, graduate or continuing education programs,
short courses, and summer classes.
SIT Study Abroad supports the school's mission with
groundbreaking programs in over 40 countries worldwide that challenge
college and university students through a rigorous integration of academic
study and field experience. Each semester-length program is built upon
a theme, allowing students to select from a number of different focus
areas, including ecology and conservation, culture and development,
peace and conflict studies, gender issues, and the arts. To date, over
25,000 students have benefited from the transformational learning experiences
offered by SIT Study Abroad.

SIT Academic Centers and Projects
As the practice arms of its academic
departments, SIT's academic centers extend the school's reach and expand
its capacity to educate and empower interculturally effective leaders,
professionals and citizens. Through the centers' research, consultation,
training projects, fellowships and short-term programs, SIT fosters
a worldwide network of individuals and organizations committed to responsible
global citizenship.
The mission of the SIT Center for Teacher Education,
Training and Research is to increase educational opportunities, improve
learning and deepen the knowledge and understanding of learning, teaching
and teacher education. Promoting research and practice, the Center
provides consultation, technical support, training and sponsored research
to client institutions. The Center's work with schools and organizations
around the world provides significant employment resources for SIT
Master of Arts in Teaching graduates.
Recent center initiatives include a three-year project to research
the teaching of Spanish to learning-disabled adults; a partnership
with Brazil's oldest binational cultural center to bring learner-centered
language teaching methods to more than 13,000 students; a Massachusetts
statewide effort to set adult ESOL standards through the establishment
of a curriculum framework; and a project to train teachers in Rwanda
to teach English to members of the Rwandan parliament. For more information,

The mission of the SIT Center for Professional Development is to strengthen the management capacity
of nongovernmental organizations and other sectors of civil society
concerned with participatory sustainable development. Drawing on the
resources of SIT's worldwide network of alumni, consultants, and partner
organizations, the Center designs and implements professional development
courses, customized training, and applied research projects for individuals,
foundations, and organizations such as USAID, the United Nations,
and the U.S. Peace Corps.
