alauans celebrate many traditional western holidays such as New Year's, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Labor Day along with national holidays such as Youth Day and Senior Citizen's day. There are several cultural events throughout the year that are well worth seeing, especially those which feature traditional dancing and musical presentations.

Palau Sport Fishing Association Annual Fishing Derby
Sponsored by: Palau Sport Fishing Association
Dates: Last week in April or first week in May (inquire locally with fishing charter operators for details).  A fishing tournament open to all contestants with cash prizes for biggest blue marlin, yellowfin & dogtooth tuna, wahoo, barracuda and mahimahi.

Tourism Awareness Week
Sponsored by: Palau Visitors Authority & Palau Tourism Industry
Date: Contact Palau Visitors Authority.  A week long celebration recognizing the tourism industry's achievements. Events include forums, parades, industry awards and school activities that feature tourism themes.

Constitution Day Festivities

A variety of activities including local dance festivities, displays of arts and crafts commemorating Palau's Constitution, culinary competitions featuring local produce and cuisine. Contact number: (680) 4881126

Earth Day
Sponsored by: The Environmental Quality Protection Board
Date: April 22
A range of activities focusing on environment protection. This event draws the biggest participation from schools with public debates, speeches, and parades with floats all focusing on "green" themes.

Independence Day
Date: October 1
This is the most celebrated holiday of the year. lt commemorates Palau's independence obtained October 1, 1994. Events include cultural feasts, symposiums, parades and a Miss Palau contest.
