The English Language Fellow Program

The English Language Fellow Program is a ten-month worldwide program funded by the Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and currently administered by World Learning/School for International Training. The program places experienced teacher trainers and recent TEFL/TESL Master's degree graduates in all regions of the world at universities, teacher-training institutions, ministries of education, and other related language education institutions for a ten-month assignment to assist with the improvement of English teaching capacity around the world. Since 1992 more than 800 English language professionals have taught and conducted programs in over 110 countries. Some of the projects are:

  • Teacher Training
  • Curriculum Development
  • Workshop and Seminar Design
  • Program Evaluation
  • Needs Assessment
  • English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
  • In-service and pre-service Training
  • Classroom teaching (junior level)

During the 2004-2005 academic year, over 115 senior and junior EL Fellows are serving in 61 countries. The recruitment for the 2005-2006 academic year will begin on or about March 1, 2005, through April 15, 2005. Contact the School for International Training for information on the program, specific projects and sites.

Goals

The English Language Fellows program is designed to enhance English teaching capacity overseas in order to provide foreign teachers and students with:

  • communications skills they will need to participate in the global economy;
  • improved access to a diverse perspectives on a broad variety of issues; and
  • information that will better enable them to understand and convey concepts about American values, democratic representative government, free enterprise, and the rule of law.

As appropriate in the institutions where they work, Fellows may introduce appropriate contemporary issues (civic and environmental education, health, current events). They model and demonstrate classroom practices that help create thoughtful and responsible behavior in students (critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, etc.)

Fellowship Levels

Senior English Language Fellows are experienced teacher trainers who have a M.A. or higher degree in TEFL/TESL or a closely related field and who have significant overseas teaching experience. These Fellows serve as full-time teacher trainers and participate in the following program- related activities: teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in a variety of professional fields, designing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) curricula and materials, conducting program evaluations, testing, organizing workshops and conferences, etc.

Junior English Language Fellows are recent (within the past five years) TEFL/TESL MA graduates who may or may not have prior overseas teaching experience. These Fellows serve as full-time EFL teachers. Normal teaching duties are 20 hours per week, with additional work in teacher training, curriculum development, and testing. Taken together, these duties should not exceed 40 hours per week and should not include administrative work.
