Here is a short profile of our management team.

Kent R. Smith President and founder, Kent has been actively involved in the building industry since 1970 and has successfully poured his skills and energies into making Smith Development one of Maui's most respected development companies. From spearheading zero-lot-line affordable housing projects on Maui to successfully undertaking large multi-lot subdivisions, he has established Smith Development as an industry leader that is continually breaking new ground in every area of property development.

David C. Goode Executive Vice President of Development Operations, headed the County of Maui’s Department of Public Works and Waste Management for more than seven years as Deputy Director and then Director. His previous experience also includes project management for Schuler Homes on Maui, Kauai, and O’ahu and owner of a general contracting firm in California. He graduated with a BSEE with Honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Mark R. Walker Senior Vice President of Finance and New Project Development, has been with Smith Development since 1999. Previously, he had been with Bank of Hawaii for fifteen years as a commercial loan officer, private banking officer and branch manager. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Small Business Management, with a minor in Journalism, from the University of Northern Colorado.

Michele Chouteau McLean Land Use Planner, served as a Legislative Analyst with the Maui County Council before starting the planning consultant firm that she ran for three years prior to joining Smith Development. Her previous experience includes work with the U.S. House of Representatives, most notably as a Senior Research Analyst with the House Republican Leadership. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Vassar College and has taken graduate courses in the MBA program at the University of Phoenix Maui campus.

Bonnie DeRego Controller/Executive Assistant to the CEO. Worked as the Office Manager/Legal Assistant for ten years at the Law Firm of Rost & Geiger. Previously worked in management in the restaurant industry. She graduated with a Certificate of Achievement, Accounting and Associates in Applied Science, and Accounting from the University of Hawaii, Maui Campus. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa a national academic honor society.

Chad Fukunaga, P.E. Civil Engineer, Project Manager overseeing design and construction. A new member of the Smith Development team, as of October 2003. He has a mix of ten years experience in construction, construction management, and civil design. Chad graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, and is also a licensed Realtor Associate.

Mary Kent Executive Assistant & Accounting, joined the Smith Development team in 2001. With over fifteen years experience managing small businesses, Mary understands and exemplifies the commitment required to ensure that all who come in contact with our company are treated professionally and with "aloha". She holds a bachelor's degree in Communications with a double minor in Public Relations and Advertising from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Uvette Sakamoto Executive Assistant and Special Projects Coordinator, she brings 13 years of management experience to Smith Development. Born and raised on Maui and a graduate of Maui High School, she began her professional career with the second-largest tour transportation business in the State.  Working up from Airport Representative, she earned the post of Assistant Manager after only three years.  After a solid ten-year tenure as Assistant Manager, she joined the Smith Development team. Her goal is to help educate local residents about the development process and the benefits that it brings, both to our economy as well as to the first-time homebuyers we strive to serve.

The management team is diverse and includes experts in the fields of finance, land acquisition and entitlements, government relations, project management, construction, real estate law, and accounting.
