The March of Dimes has been conducting special events for more than 60 years. These activities – formal balls, chef auctions and dinners, motorcycle rides, golf tournaments and WalkAmerica -- help the March of Dimes fund cutting-edge research and innovative programs to save babies. In 2003, more than $36.7 million was raised through hundreds of events held in communities across the country. With a wide variety to choose from, there is something for everyone!
Our first special events were "Birthday Balls" held in honor of President Franklin Roosevelt to raise money to defeat polio, beginning in the mid-1930s. These festivities raise nearly $8.9 million annually and have evolved into prestigious "Testimonials" for a variety of honorees like Mothers of the Year, transportation executives and real estate magnates.
March of Dimes RIDE, one of the largest AMA-sanctioned motorcycle events in the U.S., gives motorcycle enthusiasts the opportunity to rev up those engines for a great cause.
Or, come out for a gala night at one of our Chef’s Auctions. It's a chance to sample the signature dishes of a dozen or more of the top-rated chefs and caterers in your area – and includes a live auction of exciting food and travel packages for the lucky (and, of course, highest) bidder. For some communities, France's most renowned chefs visit America and participate in these prestigious French Master Chefs Dinners.
And, of course, there’s WalkAmerica, our best-known event, where people from all walks of life join together to have fun and raise money to save babies.
