When the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is sweltering, summer weather in Tahoe is perfect - daytime temperatures in the mid-80's and clean, dry mountain air assures sunny beach weather and star-filled nights. No wonder summer residents say, unequivocally, "There's no place like Tahoe." Stroll the woods, climb a mountain Walk the promenade of the Tallac Historic Site mansions on Highway 89 or tackle the raw granite of Desolation Wilderness. Scout out your terrain of choice by contacting the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Rangers supply maps listing difficulty ratings, elevation and mileage. These trails are free but may require trailhead registration. The Tahoe Rim Trail is a 150-mile hiking and equestrian trail expected to fully circumnavigate the lake by 2009. Desolation Wilderness covers 63,000 acres of sub alpine forests, granite peaks and glacially formed valleys and lakes. U.S.F.S. Guided Hikes include bird watching, eco-hikes, astronomy tours and sunset hikes. Try one of the daily 90-minute hikes led by guides in green. Children's hikes start at the Visitor Center on Highway 89. See the Stream Profile Chamber, Smokey's Trail, Tallac Historic Site Trail and Trail of the Washoe.
