What is Backup?

Backup is the process of saving computer files onto another form of media, just in case. Just in case, what? Computer malfunctions, to be exact. Malfunctions can cause the loss of valuable information. Backup can also be performed on an entire computer, just in case it crashes. However, to completely understand backup, you must also know what a file is. A file is anything you might create using any program installed onto the hard drive.

In other words, you might need to keep track of sales or customers for your business. It could be a hobby, drawing pictures or digital photography. You can also save anything of interest you might find on the Internet as a file. Understanding backup is the first step, performing the process should become second nature.

When to Backup

Backup can be performed at any time. If your computer is old and unreliable, backup can be repeated over and over as you complete a file. Mostly though, it should be done as your files are created. After that, every time the file is updated. If you don't, you risk a loss of your valuable files. Remember your computer is a flawed machine in a flawed world. Nothing is completely safe from harm. Anything from a lightning storm to failure of a hard drive can and will cause loss or damage. All in all, backup can be your only friend when disaster strikes. Don't forget to utilize this valuable tool.

Backup Storage

Backup comes in more than one form. A simple floppy disk is the most popular and the easiest to use. It is nearly flat and smaller than a CD jewel box in size. They also contain the same type of magnetic disks as a hard drive. However, their capacity is not nearly as large. Yet, they usually get the job done. Another form of backup is a step up from a floppy, called a zip drive. They are the same dimensions as a floppy, except they are thicker. Therefore, they contain a lot more information.

Instead of 1.44 Mb at the most, they are usually 100 MB or more. This type of drive usually connects to a USB port as an external drive. Another form of backup is a CD burner. They are mostly for completed files, unless you buy the blanks that can be burned over and over again. Lastly, there is also the option of installing a second hard drive in your computer. Remember though, it is open to the same problems and viruses as your computer.

It is recommended that you also use another form of backup.

Preventing Disaster

You can not always avert a disaster. Backup can be the only way to keep your files safe. However, taking a few extra steps to protect your computer could help your cause. Things like keeping the area clean and dust free. Avoiding the obvious, like water. Any liquid, for that matter, could damage your computer for good. Sometimes flooding can not be avoided, however try to store your computer away from open windows. Unshielded speakers can erase your hard drive, or even a floppy disk.

At least, five feet away is a good distance to be safe. Remember prevention is a good thing, but backup is better.
