Secretary Powell departed Washington on November 17 for travel to Santiago, Chile for meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. He attended the APEC Ministerial Meetings (Nov. 17-18) and held bilateral meetings with counterparts while in Santiago. At the APEC meetings the U.S.  promoted trade liberalization and facilitation and supported efforts to ensure security, enhance transparency, and fight corruption. 

Secretary Powell then traveled to Israel and the Palestinian territories on November 21-22,  The Secretary met with Israeli officials and the new Palestinian leadership to discuss how, during this period of transition, we can move forward toward peace and realize the shared goals of the President's vision of two states living side by side in peace and security.

Secretary Powell arrives on November 17  in Santiago, Chile for meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation  or APEC forum.  State Department PhotoThe Secretary discussed upcoming Palestinian Presidential elections, and how all parties can support this essential step in helping a new Palestinian leadership emerge that is committed to democratic reforms, transparency in governance, restoration of law and order, and fighting terror.  He also looked at ways to revitalize the Palestinian economy, and consulted on how to ensure successful implementation of the Israeli plan to withdraw from Gaza and parts of the West Bank in a way that advances the roadmap and the two-state vision.

Secretary Powell then traveled to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to participate in an expanded regional conference (Nov. 22-23), hosted by the Government of Egypt, to discuss promoting security and stability in Iraq and Iraq's democratic transition.
