Aqueduct Race Track
After a conduit for the Brooklyn Water Works was built in southwestern
Queens in the 1850’s, the surrounding neighborhood became known
as Aqueduct. Aqueduct Racetrack opened nearby in South Ozone Park in 1894.
Thanks to renovations made in 1959 Aqueduct had become the nation’s
leading betting track. Later inner track was constructed to facilitate
winter racing.
New York Hall Of Science
The New York Hall of Science is New York City’s only hands-on science
and technology center. The Hall features more than 225 hands-on exhibits.
Here visitors can explore the wonder and excitement of biology, chemistry
and physics.
Queens Botanical Gardens
The Queens Botanical Gardens have outstanding seasonal floral displays
on 40 acres of land, including herb trees, bee and bird gardens, Japanese,
cherry and crabapple tree groves, and the award-winning Victorian Wedding
gardens. There are facilities available for weddings and photos. The garden
also has a plant and gift shop.
Queens Wildlife Center (Zoo)
This zoo, divided into "wild" and "domestic" areas,
houses some 250 animals of 40 species. Here visitors can explore pockets
of North American habitat, from the great American Plains to a rocky California
Coast, to a Northeastern Forest. In the domestic area visitors can meet
and touch sheep, ducks, rabbits, and other animals. There is also an Education
Center, where people of all ages can learn about wildlife and plants.
Shea Stadium
It was the first stadium of its size to have an extensive escalator system
and capable of being converted from baseball diamond to football gridiron
and back using two motor-operated stands that moved on underground tracks.
Shea Stadium is the noisiest outdoor ballpark in the majors because it
is in the flight path of La Guardia Airport.
USTA National Tennis Center
The USTA National Tennis Center is the largest public tennis facility in the world. It features 33 outdoor courts – not including Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium or the Grandstand courts – and nine indoor courts, which are available for year-round use by the public. Although the USTA National Tennis Center is best known as the home of the US Open, a number of other exciting events are held at the facility each year.
