Never pay fees up front for a credit card, if your card issuers are legitimate, they will not ask for fee up front, unless you're applying for a secured card. When you are applying for a secured card, understand how your deposit will be used. Don't obtain a credit card, through willful means; if you are credit-worthy, you can get one yourself, otherwise, its less likely that any legitimate issuer will give you one. Use you credit card sparingly, if required, at other times, use debit card.
Save yourself from debit by using this credit opportunity wisely. Using the credit responsibly, will also reflect thinking. Apply only for the cards you find indispensable, and don't charge more than you can afford. Pay regularly to maintain a good credit rating, pay bills promptly.
