Data Backup Today, Tonight, Tomorrow
Data backup should be part of your IT routine. It is up to you to decide what time frame it should take on, as a file updates, snapshots, by the minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, it is all up to your recovery strategy. Anyway you look at it data is the lifeblood of most modern businesses and should be protected.
The Reason for Data Backup
Developing an effective data backup strategy has everything to do with surviving a date disaster. Computer software, hardware and its manufacturers are not perfect. Hard drives are mechanical objects that have the capacity to actually wear out. Those that install the software as well as those using the software are not infallible nor are the rest of your employees including yourself. It does not take but one error to start a chain reaction that, if not caught, can wreak havoc on your computer system. A virus is easily during downloading of data or information from email attachments.
Consider that your data may be your whole business and the value of it rises ten-fold. A data loss or corruption with out a backup to restore from can cause a loss in business. For some businesses these losses are never recoverable and can cause the business to fail completely.
Data Backup Software Can Be Used Anyway You Want
Each business has its own requirements for using backup software. Some businesses require instantaneous backup. Some businesses require a daily backup and others feel okay with a weekly backup. Remember, whatever time frame you choose to work with, any data that gets created after the last backup and before the next will need to be re-created if it is critical data. Can you live with that? Many companies can't continue to do business without that critical data being in place 24/7. Plan accordingly or face a loss.
Backup software in today's market allows the user to backup in many ways. Automatic backup is a popular method. It allows the user to enter a few settings and then runs according to the time frame set by the user. This saves time and money on the personnel equivalent of manual backup. Manual backup of large amounts of data, especially graphics, presentation, or drawing documents, can take enormous amounts of time. Backup software allows the reallocation of man-hours giving the company added efficiency
Data Backup Can Be Restored
The whole reason for data backup is the ability to restore a system and its files from the backup. This process of restoration should be mapped out just as the disaster recovery plan should be mapped out. If the data backup has not been tested for recovery then you put your company at risk in the face of a disaster.
A routine following of data backup in no way guarantees the files being backed up can actually be recovered. Include in your plan a spot test for each data backup. It may prove to be the best idea in your recovery plan.
