Digital Certificate Definition
Digital certificates can be used when your company or agency needs to identify people and resources over the Internet or other networks. They can also be used to enable confidential communication between two parties.
Digital certificates provide identification in the electronic world. Issued by trusted third parties called Certification Authorities, digital certificates cannot be forged or tampered with. The Certificate Authorities keep track of the digital certificates to enable people to access web sites and network resources in a secure confidential manner.
The Certification Authority digitally signs the certificates when they are created. This signature is used as verification of what is contained within the certificate.
Each digital certificate contains information about its owner and the Certification Authority that issued it, including:
- Name of the Certification Authority that issued the certificate.
- Serial number of the certificate.
- Public key of the holder.
- Lifetime of the certificate. Includes the start and end date.
- Certificate holder's name and other identifying information.
