Glossary Of Terms
This is the place to find definitions to a list of commonly used terms for
the ezboard network of communities.
- Account
- What is created upon registration for the ezboard service. An ezboard
account can either be Global or Local.
- Administrator / Admin
- A user who manages an ezboard community and is responsible for customizing,
managing and promoting the community. Also see ezOp.
- Bandwidth
- In ezboard terminology, the amount of traffic a community or site generates,
measured in Megabytes of data requested.
- BMP / .bmp
- A MS Windows image format that stands for bitmap. Bitmap files tend to
be large in file size.
- Browser
- A software application such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape
Communicator that allows users to view, navigate and download documents
over the Web.
- CGI
- An interface creation program that enables a web page to be created "on
the fly" based on information from buttons, text input, etc.
- Community
- An online or virtual gathering place for people with similar interests
(e.g., professional, social or demographic) to engage in two-way communication
and share ideas, knowledge, information and opinions. A community is made
up of one or more forums.
- Community Chat
- A feature that allows for real time chat between registered ezboard users.
Each chat room can have up to 25 active users.
- Community Chest
- A payment option for subscription services that allows all community
members to voluntarily share in the cost by contributing directly to a community
fund that can only be used to purchase ezboard services.
- Community Name
- The name that appears at the top of the community. This is different
from the Web ID of a board.
- Control Center
- The main administration page for ezboard administrators and registered
users to maintain personal information, mark favorites, and manage and customize
ezboards and forums.
- Cookie
- A file on your computer that records information such as where your have
been on the Web, in order to remember and facilitate future requests. Users
can accept or deny cookies by changing their browser settings.
- Discussion
- See Topic.
- Emoticon
- The online means to express facial expressions or gestures :-)
- ezOP
- Also reffered to as the community owner, the ezOP is the administrator who created the community.
- ezSupporter
- ezboard’s premium user account that includes features and options not
available to a free user account.
- Favorite
- An ezboard community that is marked by a registered user for easy future
reference. A Favorite can be created and accessed from the user’s Control
Center.

- Firewall
- A network security system used to monitor and restrict traffic between
an internal computer network (sometimes referred to as an Intranet) and
the Internet.
- Forum
- A discussion area (containing post and reply messages) within an ezboard
community. A community may have one or more forums. A forum may have one
or more topics.
- ForumFind
- ezboard’s keyword based search feature. Use it to find any active ezboard
community.
- FTP
- (File Transfer Protocol) Standard method of moving files across the Internet.
- GIF / .gif
- (Graphic Image File) A standard graphic file format (.gif) commonly used
on the Web.
- Global User
- A registered user that has signed up for an account from the ezboard
home page (http://www.ezboard.com) or a community, enabling the user to
participate in all public ezboard communities and access his/her Control
Center.
- Gold Community
- ezboard’s premium community service. In addition to an ad-free experience,
Gold Communities receive premium features and services not available to
free communities.
- HTML
- (HyperText Markup Language) The language used to create web pages and
documents for display in a browser. HTML allows text to be linked to another
file on the Internet.
- HTTP
- (HyperText Transfer Protocol) The format of the Web. The "http"
at the beginning of an address tells a browser that it is viewing a Web
page.
- Hypermatch
- An innovative matching tool that gives you the ability to meet people
and find communities based on your interests.
- Hypertext
- Text that can be clicked by a user to cause another document or web page
to be retrieved and displayed.
- IP address
- An address made up of a series of four numbers separated by periods (e.g.,
149.174.211.5) assigned to every computer connected to the Internet.
- ISP
- Internet Service Provider - A company that provides and sells physical
Internet access to users.
- JPEG / .jpg
- A highly compressed graphic file format (.jpg).
- Java
- A programming language specifically designed for Internet based programs.
Using small Java programs called “applets”, Web pages can include functions
such as animations, calculators, and other fancy tricks.
- Javascript
- An open-source HTML compatible programming language that is used by many
Web developers to create dynamic content on their sites.
- Keyword
- Word or phrase used to identify an ezboard for search purposes.
- Link
- A clickable reference in text or graphics to another web page.
- Local User
- A user that has signed up for an account from a specific ezboard community,
enabling the user to participate only in that ezboard as a registered user.
Global user registration from the ezboard home page is recommended for full
access to all ezboard communities and the Control Center.
- Login Name
- See User Name.
- Member
- A user who has made at least one post at a community is considered a
member of that community.
- Message
- See Post.
- Message Board
- See Community.
- Moderator
- A registered user assigned by an administrator of a particular ezboard
community and given the authority to edit posts and move, delete and close
topics in a forum.
- Non-Registered User
- A user of ezboard that can browse ezboard communities but does not receive
the benefits offered to registered users, including administrative and customization
options within the Control Center.
- Password
- A unique case sensitive combination of letters and numbers that is provided
to registered users to login. A password may be changed by the user at any
time to maintain secrecy and privacy.
- Post
- A user-generated message or reply found within a forum or discussion area.
- Public Profile
- Information about a user that is provided by the user and viewable by
others.
- Profile Skin
- The look and feel of your public profile – the colors and graphics that
form the background and shape the layout of the profile. Profile skins allow
you to create a unique identity for yourself on ezboard.
- Registered user
- A user of ezboard that registers either as a global or local user in order
to gain the benefit of many ezboard features that are not available to non-registered
users.
- Reply
- A user-generated message posted in response to another post.
- Server
- Host computer that houses and serves up text, graphics and multimedia
content (such as ezboards) over the Web to users.
- Support Client
- Email based help available to ezboard users.
- Thread
- A series of user-generated posts that make up one particular topic or
discussion.
- Topic
- A user-generated post which begins a new threaded discussion. A forum
may have one or more topics.
- URL
- (Universal Resource Locator) The address of a particular site or page
on the Web, such as http://www.ezboard.com.
- Unregistered User
- A user of ezboard that can browse ezboard communities (that choose to
allow unregistered users) but does not receive the benefits offered to registered
users, including administrative and customization options within the Control
Center.
- User Name
- The name or handle that you use for identification and access to the
ezboard network. If you are a registered Global or Local user, you will
also have a password associated with this login name.
- Web ID
- The name of a community that is part of its URL. For example, the text
after the last slash is a WebID: for a community with a URL of http://go.ezboard.com/bcc
, the Web ID is “bcc”.
- Web Page
- Collection of electronic information on the Web, formatted in HTML and
addressed by a single URL.
