The theme for December is: Pets and Animals

Sometimes when life gets hard pets can make the best friends. If someone you loved very much was struggling in life and you decided to get them a pet, who would it be for, which pet would it be and why would you choose to give them that?

Here's what some "very friendly" SmartGirls said:

  • If I had to help out my best friend, Mellone, then I'd get her a golden retriever. They're affectionate, just like Mel - when out of trouble and mischeif. They'd use their affection to win over our Mellone, and soon they would be both as happy as ever! ~Charli, age 13

  • I'd give them a dog. Dogs are the closest pet to humans. My friend's dog is amazing, he always knew when she's upset and comes over to snuggle up to her - it's so cute! A dog might help them to feel better because they'd get a lot of fresh air from taking it for walks and because they take a lot of your energy cause they're very messy. This might help to relax them and forget their worries. ~Ami, age 14

  • An animal? Why would I give them that? I'm sorry, but I don't really understand the fuss made over animals. If a person I loved was struggling an animal would just add to their worries. I'd make myself available to that person and help out as much as possible. If I was a good cook, I might make them dinner a few times a week; get them involved in a gym or a yoga class. The more things you do, the easier it is to get them done. Weird but true. ~Jessica, age 14

  • I think that the ideal pet for a struggling person would be a gerbil. Why? I wouldn't want to press a hard commitment on this friend; after all, he/she is struggling in life. A gerbil is easy to feed- pet food is cheap and so is fruit (and veggies that you don't want!). A gerbil is easy to clean- only the cage needs an empty and a rinse once a month, gerbils are very clean and watching them do so is fun! A gerbil doesn't live too long. 2 years isn't too much to get bored with or too little to feel another stress. Gerbils only need a quick run once a day, just get a gerbil ball, and they like to be handled and don't usually bite. Finally, watching them is interesting. ~Larka, age 15
