|
The Met Office has been providing meteorological services
for over 140 years. We deliver a world-class, value-added
service to a wide range of loyal customers and have an able
and committed workforce, continually improving their knowledge
and skills.
We have been an MoD trading fund since 1996 which means
we have considerable freedom and flexibility to operate
in a way that is best for us and best for our stakeholders
- the MoD, our customers, staff and, of course, the public.
We offer a structured career path with plenty of variety,
and opportunities to sample work in different divisions
throughout the organisation. Specialisation is not a necessity,
unless you want it to be.

|
|
We have stations and staff throughout the world, as well as links
with other meteorological institutions and universities.
- Forecasters are most likely to be based at different locations,
principally in the UK.
- Marine science also offers the opportunity to work in UK ports,
such as London.
- The majority of graduate recruits can expect to work at our
headquarters in Exeter.

Our management take induction seriously and invest a considerable
amount of time and interest in helping new staff to become effective
as soon as possible. We all want to excel - we want to help you
to achieve this even before you begin on your first day.
Induction at the Met Office has four steps
-
A brochure about the Met Office in response to your enquiry
-
A general workbook given to all new staff on their first
morning, which is part of an induction starter pack and programme
-
A department-specific information pack and location information
-
A one-day induction workshop for all new staff, which aims
to make your time with us productive and worthwhile
|
|
- We continue to promote equality in the workplace, recognising
that all staff contribute to our success
- Human resource policies and procedures are thoroughly checked
to ensure that all staff and customers are treated fairly and
with respect
- We base decisions about career advancement only on an individual's
ability, qualifications and suitability for the work
- We are continually working to train our managers in the awareness
of diversity, equal opportunities and disability
- We have improved access to buildings for mobility-impaired
staff and customers
- We have been awarded the 'two ticks' symbol to demonstrate
our commitment to disabled people and to encourage disabled
potential recruits to choose the Met Office as their employer
- We recruit staff in accordance with the Civil Service recruitment
code - meaning we operate a system of fair and open competition,
including advertising positions where they can be seen and attract
the appropriate response.
