What is Data Recovery?
Data recovery is a process by which data that has been rendered inaccessible inside a machine can be recovered.

In today's society, we have many machines which we use to store data. Anything from a regular desktop personal computer, to laptops, to PDAs, to cell phones, and many other machines can have data recovered from them.
This is very important because so much of our lives are recorded electronically. Imagine if you had your entire banking history recorded on your computer. Suddenly your system crashes, and you cannot access your information. You would be in a lot of trouble. Data recovery services can access your information for you.
What Do Data Recovery Service Companies Do?
Typically, you will provide the company with the piece of equipment that your information is stored on, such as your PC hard drive, or your laptop, or your PDA. The people who work for data recovery companies specialize in finding ways to access your missing information. They are techniques not known by the general population.
They will run certain data recovery commands on your piece of machinery to try to obtain as much information on that drive as possible. For instance, many people think that because they press the delete key to remove a piece of information from their computer that it is gone. This is not true. The information still remains backed up on your system but is not accessible using the interface provided by your operating systems.
They are generally only accessible using the types of commands that the data recovery companies will use. It is a failsafe to be used in case your system ever completely crashes.
How Do I Know When I Need to Use a Data Recovery Service?
Many operating systems such as Windows have endeavored to make themselves as user-friendly as possible. There are now system restore applications on most PCs. Data recovery services can be necessary if your machine has been damaged in such a way as to render it inoperable.
That is to say, if your machine is so damaged that it will not turn on, or if your keyboard is so damaged that you cannot type on your computer. The data recovery service company will remove your drive from the damaged parts of your system and access it using their own hardware.
The most important thing to remember is that the your system has to be VERY severely damaged in order to make it impossible to recover data from. Do not assume that just because your piece of machinery looks bad that your data is lost forever. Take it to a data recovery company and ask them if anything can be done. It is very likely that they will be able to recover at least some of your information.
