Kealakehe's road to reform

The administration and teachers at Kealakehe Elementary are in a frustrating position.

Kealakehe exceeded No Child Left Behind benchmarks in 2004, with 51 percent of students demonstrating proficiency in reading and 34 percent of students meeting standards in math.

Kipuka Pepeiao fire 50 percent contained
Twenty firefighters returned to the Kipuka Pepeiao burn area Tuesday morning where they felled snags and cut firebreaks on the south and east edge of the burn, tying into lava flows and rock outcroppings.
