  • A Live Red Ribbon
    World AIDS Day represented a symbol of commitment to and solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS. The red ribbon was made up of several hundred red poncho-clad staff members from the Pan American Health Organization. One of those wearing a red poncho was 27-year-old Violeta Ross, an AIDS activist from Bolivia and a person living with HIV. "Put on the poncho," Violeta told those assembled in front of PAHO's Washington headquarters, "and show that you are part of the team that is going to fight AIDS." See the video clip »
  • World AIDS Day Public Service Announcements
    PAHO has produced two public service announcements calling for the need for all women and girls to have access to the information and the means necessary to protect them from the AIDS virus. More »
  • First-Hand Experiences in Maternal and Child Health
    World Health Day 2005 will focus on maternal and child health. The World Health Organization has launched "Great Expectations," where six mothers-to-be in different countries share their experiences of pregnancy and childbirth. One of them is from the region of the Americas: Damiana, who lives in the outskirts of La Paz, Bolivia. More »

    Perspectives in Health, the magazine published three times a year by the Pan American Health Organization has a new edition online. This edition is a special issue on the Millennium Development Goals. More »
  • International Effort on Infectious Diseases Underway
    An international effort to update the International Health Regulations (IHRs), the most useful instrument in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, is under way until June 2005. PAHO has created a web page that centralizes this effort in the Region of the Americas. More »

  • Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Announced
    Today the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) announced the winners for inter-American health awards in veterinary public health, voluntary service and health literature. These awards are part of the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a partnership between PAHEF and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Award ceremonies to honor the winners and their work will be held in Mexico, Colombia and Peru. Read More »
