Debt Reduction Through Money Management: Track Your Spending and Reduce Expenses, Pay off Debts Faster

One easy way to find out what areas of your life you can reduce debt in is to track your spending. After you have been tracking your spending for awhile, sit down and look at where your money is going. Eliminate and reduce everything you possibly can. When you track your spending you can see exactly where your money is going and not only reduce the amount you spend but also work on paying off ongoing debts (like credit cards).

Take the money you save from reducing expenses and apply it towards your credit card balances, but make sure that you use the extra in addition to what you already pay on those balances and not in replace of it.

Here is a list of common expenses that you can consult when you are making a list of your own for the purposes of tracking your spending.

Think rent/mortgage/car payments, utilities and phone, insurance (house/car/health), groceries and household items, child care, gas/parking fees, credit card/loan payments, breakfast/lunch/snacks (while you are at work), entertainment/pleasure (movie theater/eating out/renting and buying movies/books and music), clothing costs (new clothes/laundry/dry cleaning), home/car maintenance, cable TV, Internet access, vacations, gifts, newspapers/magazines, pet care, gyms/other memberships, religious/charitable donations.

These are often more appreciated because they are truly from the heart.

Shop at yard/garage sales and thrift stores, where you can usually find brand new items very cheap. Another idea is to contact your bank about setting up a "Christmas Club" account, where you can put money each month and have a nest egg of cash for your holiday needs at the end of the year.
