SIT Master's International Program

Combine Graduate School with Peace Corps Service

If you're finding it hard to choose between graduate school and the U.S. Peace Corps, SIT's Master's International Program allows you to do both. Through a partnership with the School for International Training (SIT), which offers master level studies in public policy and administration/NGO development and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), you can become a Peace Corps Volunteer as partial fulfillment of your graduate degree.

Master's International programs are offered in areas where there are shortages of skilled people to serve as Peace Corps Volunteers. Thus you will be assured that your Peace Corps assignment will make good use of your academic preparation. You will also be confident that your graduate studies will bring you added respect and credibility in you country of service.

As a Master's Internationalist at SIT, you will:

  • Receive no tuition charges from SIT during your Peace Corps service.
  • Complete all or most of your on-campus studies prior to entering the Peace Corps.
  • Receive unparalleled practical experience from Peace Corps service, including three months of language, technical and cross-cultural training, and two years of professional experiences in an assignment related to your graduate studies.
  • Return to the U.S. to complete any final requirements and receive your degree upon completion of your Peace Corps service.

How does it work?

You must apply to both the Peace Corps and SIT at least six months prior to the beginning of the SIT academic year (generally the last week of August). SIT and the Peace Corps will each consider your applications separately. Once both accept you, you must inform the Peace Corps of the approximate date you would like to begin your Peace Corp service. You will be notified of your specific Peace Corps assignment approximately five months before that date.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for the Peace Corps, you must be a U.S. citizen, in good general health, and at least 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit. Although married couples without dependent children may be accepted, both spouses must qualify for a Volunteer assignment. It is advisable that you consult with a Peace Corps recruiter regarding specific qualifications for Peace Corps service.

Consider the Benefits

  • Living and housing expenses.
  • Transportation to and from your assignment-language, technical and cross-cultural training. Medical and dental care.
  • Vacation time and allowance.
  • A $6,075 readjustment allowance after 27 months of training and service.
  • Job- hunting assistance when you return to the U.S.
  • Noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment upon successful completion of service.
