Illegitimate vs. Legitimate Home Business
Do you really know if a work at home business you are interested in is a legitimate opportunity? Work at home schemes are a dime a dozen nowadays. You may see their advertisements posted on streetlight and telephone poles as you drive to work. They may sound very appealing, professional and legitimate to you, making you to want to jump right in. Don't do it!
Always proceed with caution with any home business, doing your research to find out whether it's a legitimate business opportunity or a scam. These ads sometimes omit the significant fees you may have to pay just to get started. In addition, you may not make any money for weeks on end. They seem to make their profits off of you and many others who respond to the ads they place and if you don't do your research to find out if it is a legitimate home business, they will rip you off as well.
Home Work That May Not Be a Legitimate Business
Some of the work at home jobs that may not be a legitimate business include medical billing. Medical billing is a business that is run out of your home off of your home computer, processing claim forms for dentist and doctors. Usually after you do the processing and send the claims forms to the so-called "billing center", you receive no payment for it, and you're usually out of the payment you sent to them to get started in medical billing in the first place.
Another of these well-known scams is assembly or craft work from your home. Most of the time you are required to invest hundreds of dollars for supplies and equipment to get started or you spend hours producing crafts or assembling the products for a company only to find that you don't get paid.
Now, it is common to have to spend money upfront to start a BUSINESS, but most of the time, if you have to spend money to start a JOB, it will probably end up as not being a legitimate business opportunity. Envelope stuffing is yet another one of the illegitimate businesses out there. For a small fee, they will tell you how to earn money stuffing envelopes at home or to get started stuffing envelopes.
After paying your fee, you may receive a letter saying that the only way to earn an income is to place ads like they have placed and when other respond to them, you will receive a commission. This is known as not being a legitimate business, but a scam.
What to Do If You Think It is Not a Legitimate Home Business

The BBB has a list of almost every business and what services are offered for that business. You can search when the company opened, how they have been doing over the years and if they have had any complaints from other employees or consumers.
