Conservation Science Symposia, Seminars and InternshipsThe Conservation Science Department collaborates with the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden to offer programs for academic audiences and stewardship professionals, as well as internships for students interested in pursuing careers or graduate education opportunities in conservation biology.
Symposia
The Garden hosts the annual Janet Meakin Poor Research Symposium every autumn. These one- to three-day symposia focus on a topic and its relevance to conservation and stewardship. Past topics include mycorrhizal relationships, plant population genetics, pollination biology, ex situ conservation and the biology of small populations.
The 2003 Janet Meakin Poor Research Symposium was held on October 23. Download the symposium abstracts from the 2002 symposium on invasive plants.
Seminars
The Plant Science Forum was developed to facilitate communication and collaboration among scientists in the Chicago region. The Garden hosts two seminars each year for professionals in a variety of the plant sciences, followed by a reception where attendees can meet and talk.
Internships
Most internships are coordinated by the Intern Program of the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden. The Conservation Science Department hosts two to four interns per year. Internships range from six to 12 months. Conservation interns typically have a background in biology, botany or ecology. Interns have the opportunity to learn many techniques, but usually focus on a particular research project that they are involved with from planning, through data analysis, to presentation or publication. They also have the opportunity to take one or more certificate courses and participate in a regular discussion of current conservation literature. If you are interested in an internship, please see the application information on the Intern Program page.
An additional internship program is the Conservation and Land Management Mentoring Program offered in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. The program places college graduates to assist Bureau of Land Management professional staff.
