Barcelona Tourist Information

Barcelona has something to offer to all its visitors, businessmen and tourists, younger and older, beach lovers and culture seekers. It will satisfy the aesthetic and gastronomic needs of the most demanding. A city one of it's kind in the entire Mediterranean cost line.

Being the capital of Catalunya, Barcelona is also very distinct from most other Spanish cities. Colourful and original architecture born out of the imagination of Ildefons Cerda, Antonio Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalc and Lluís Domenech i Montaner give today's Barcelona a unique atmosphere. The original constructions of many generations of talented creators set the background of everyday activities.

You may also easily change "el ambiente" just by crossing the street from one historic period to a different one. City life never ceases in Barcelona. It is in fact more likely that you find the streets empty at 2pm then 2am. Awaiting cooler evening temperatures, most people tend to go out and enjoy the city after sunset. Although it seems there are more bars and restaurants then inhabitants, they are always full and busy offering a large variety of local, regional and international cuisine. You'll wish your holiday was at east a month longer:)

You probably won't be able to see everything you'd like, we suggest you at least try and not miss out on the following:

Here are some things you should make time to see on your trip.

First Time in Barcelona

The best way to get to know the city is by foot. Ideal is to start your trip walking downwards La Rambla. You will come across many hotels, inviting bars and restaurants. Along the central tree lane there are many street performers, vending stands with flowers, birds, and souvenirs. The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic) to the left hand side is another great place to find a cafe or restaurant. If you continue all the way to the end you will enter the newest part of La Rambla, Rambla de Mar which actually is built on the sea. In many parts of Barcelona you will be able to admire Gaudi's works, among them (Sagrada Família, Casa Mila-La Pedrera, Casa Vicenç, the Casa Batlló, Park Güell, etc.). His buildings evoke many emotions among others George Orwell's who called its works "one of the most hideous buildings in the world". Regardless of your personal art taste, you will want to see Gaudi's famous unfinished cathedral Sagrada Familia, and Park Güell will not disappoint anyone. The Port Olímpic is not only for sport lovers, it's charm is maybe discussable, but it still remains a pleasant place for a summer stroll and offers a nice view of the city panorama. Port Vell, or the Old Port will appeal to all. For a great view of the city we recommend the Ferris wheel in Tibidabo.

Once you have managed to see the essential...

You have probably heard a few controversial opinions on several of Barcelona's districts, Raval among them. Some disregard its potential and beauty, while others thrive on its cultural genuinity and impact. Most alternative entertainment in Barcelona takes place right there, which makes it a place worth visiting. Art fans will also appreciate the contemporary art museum (MACBA). Other museums worth visiting are: the Museum Maritim and MNAC, the Museo Picasso and the Fundación Joan Miró. For less serious entertainment, we also recommend getting to know city's outdoor attractions like the dancing water fountains (Font Magica) in Montjüic accompanied by a sound and light spectacular. An original place to visit is Barcelona's first working class area Barceloneta, today a desired tourist zone, as it is the neighbourhood closest to the beach and at the same time to the centre.

If you still have time and think you've seen everything inside the city, you might want to consider going for a day trip to some of the great places outside of Barcelona. The entire Costa Brava is a tourist destination, we particularly recommend a visit to the lovely town of Sitges with its boat harbour of some spectacular vessels. You might want to visit the co-principality of Andorra, especially for a shopping spree; it has great tax free stores. It's not as close as the coast, so you'll need to calculate in time of travel. If you are visiting Barcelona in the winter and you miss the snow, Andorra will remind you of home. You will also have a chance to do some skiing in the Pyrenees. Worth visiting is also the sacred mountain of Montserrat. It is only 60 km northwest of the city and is becoming a more popular tourist attraction in Catalonia every year.
