What is a Home Business?

A home business is a business that is operated strictly out of the home. These home businesses sometimes come with restrictions. What restrictions, you ask? Simply put there are zoning regulations to think of. A good point is this. Some houses and apartment complexes will not allow you to have an at home business because of zoning regulations or rules pertaining to apartments. Some gated or restricted communities will also have these same restrictions. Unfortunately, that is just the way that it is. If you are interested in having a home business, check for the zoning restrictions.

What Else Do I Need to Know about a Home Business?

With a home business, you will need to set up a home office inside the home. The computer should have good financial software on it such as Quicken, or Peachtree. It will also need a good word processing suite, such as Corel, Word Perfect or Microsoft Office. These suites will also include spreadsheet software such as Lotus, Excel and Quicken. A business telephone is next, with an answering machine and fax machine. Business cards are a must. Licensing is also a must.

Insurance for your home business is also a must. Good financial and business planning are key as well. Advertisement, whether it be on the internet, newspaper, on your vehicle, or in the yellow pages is a must. Also beyond what is listen, you will also have to get in touch with the IRS in regards to your home business. Things such as workman's compensation, must be thought out and planned if one is to have employees. Insurance on the house and the vehicle that you drive are also paramount.

With your computer, a modem of 28 8 is the least that you should have. Other business materials should include, a business card holder, a rolodex, files and information on businesses, a file for your home business which includes the serial numbers of any equipment that you may use in your home business and other things not listed here.

Financially, What Should I Expect with My Home Business?

Your home business is going to take some time and some cash to get it started. Experts say that to start a home business, that you should have at least 6 months cash on hand and 6 months of living expenses to start out with while your business is getting off the ground. Make a budget and stick to it. When the money starts coming in, re invest it into your home business. It will be tempting to spend it, but don't.

Keep that cash flow going into your business until it is successful enough to run by itself. This way your home business stays solvent and you don't end up going into the red. Keep a budget also for office expenses, advertising expenses and other expenses and don't go over it. This is what is going to keep you afloat for a while, so practice budgeting.
