Developing Products for Your Small Business

Almost every small business out there has some sort of product to sell. Even if you are largely in the business of providing services to customers you can diversify your small business and make more money by providing products related to those services.

Basic Products for Your Small Business

Obviously the type and number of products you sell will depend on the type of small business you are running. If you are opening an auto repair shop, for instance, you will probably have many of the same products as your competition, including spark plugs, batteries, tires, hoses and belts. You probably will not be setting your small business apart from others in your area by carrying different products, unless you specialize in a certain make of car and carry only those parts.

If your small business is all about providing services, such as being a freelance copy editor or graphic designer, you might not think you need any actual products. But you should consider whether you can write a basic book that you can publish yourself or sell as an ebook on your Web site that will tell your clients the basics of what you do or help them to part of the job themselves (for instance a book about color theory and Web design would be a great product for a designer).

This product would establish you as an expert in your field and wouldn't help your clients so much that they would no longer require your help.

Unique Products for Your Small Business

Other small business concepts require setting your business apart by providing products that are different from what all the other businesses out there are selling. To find out what will make your products different, you have to do some research. Go around to stores like yours and see what they are selling. You can also research companies similar to your small business on the Internet to see what is going on in your trade around the world.

You may find inspiration from other people's products (of course never copy a competitor's idea outright) or you may see a gap in their product line or something that you can do better. You've just found your niche and a way to market yourself that will set you apart from your competition. For instance, let's say you make candles from your home and sell them on the Internet.

After looking around, you find that there are numerous sites that sell brightly colored scented candles, but you don't find anyone selling colored candles that are unscented. Your product line will be unique because you can market it to people who like to decorate with candles but can't tolerate the strong smells.

The Key to Small Business Products

Whenever you are considering a new product for your small business, you need to think about the ways it is different from what is already out there and, more importantly, how this product will help your customers. If it's like everything else that's already on the market or it doesn't provide an obvious benefit, perhaps you should think a little harder about the product before spending a lot of money developing a product that may not be successful.
