Small Business Owners Need to Be Scrupulous

There was this one small business owner that I once met some 10 years back and I remember him being very honest and scrupulous. He charged me 80% more than he should have and the funny thing is that, he called me up the day after I paid him the amount blindly, to inform me that he has given me the wrong invoice! I didn't even notice. He returned the overpaid amount to me in cash, INSTANTLY, on the spot! Many people consider such scrupulous people (people with a very loud inner voice) stupid.

But I don't.

I remember this man till this very day and I would have continued to do business with him if not for the fact that I lost his contact number. In fact, I was and still am so impressed with his business etiquettes that I would give his small business all the support he needs! Being scrupulous means that you need to do what's right instead of taking advantage of others when there's a chance to. Believe you me that millions of unscrupulous people are lurking around in corners everywhere, waiting for the chance to pounce.

Small Business Owner with Principles

As a small business owner, we have to consider this: do we want 15 minutes of fame because we did something right or do we want 15 minutes of infamy because we took advantage of someone? Sure, sometimes we may be tempted to let things slide or take the easy way out by lying or pretending that nothing happened cause no one noticed it or no one can prove you wrong.

But it will do your small business a whole lot of good if you could show your clients that they are dealing with a very scrupulous small business owner. You want to establish trust with your clients so that they will continue to give you projects and business.

Small Business Principles

You may silently congratulate yourself for being so clever and smart for worming yourself out of trouble but it's never over. Small business owners need to have stronger principles than people who don't run their own business. For one, there's no one else to blame. If you regret your actions, you're the only one to blame.

Lied

Imagine if your client found out that you lied at a much later date - you'd be embarrassed, wouldn't you? Somehow or the other, someone will find you out! That's the truth. If you lied about an invoice or a promise now, you may be let off the hook now but one day, you will forget that you lied and the other person may have remembered your lie. And it's not worth losing business because of a small lie.

Spend More Time on Moving Your Small Business Ahead...

...instead of spending so much time covering your tracks. We all know that one lie will lead to another and then another...and then another - until you're actually found out. Why spend so much time trying to remember that you lied about something when you can take the thorn out of your side once and for all? A client will NOT give you any more projects if your lie is found out. Is it really worth it?
