Before Starting a Small Business in Your Home, Consider the Following

Starting a small business in your home is a tempting prospect. The advent of the home computer and the technological advancements that came with it, make it much more possible for individuals to start a small business.

Starting a small business in your home allows the small business owner to keep overhead and operating costs at a minimal. However, not all homes are conducive to housing a small business. And now all small businesses are conducive to being housed in your home.

To decide if your is, your will need to consider the following.

Is Your Home Conducive to Starting a Small Business?

Statistics show that small business owners who are able to "set their work space" away from their living space have a much greater chance of succeeding with their small business inside their home.

If you house is so small that the only work space you will have is at the kitchen table where the kids are doing their homework and the door is being slammed as they come in and out all afternoon, or in the living room where you will be distracted by the family watching television, then you might want to think twice about starting a small business in your home.

If on the other hand, you already have a room set up as an office, or you have a room that is not currently being used for living space and could be set up as a small business office where you can work away from distractions, then starting a small business in your home might be a very good idea.

What about other space requirements. Will your small business need space to store an inventory of products? Is there any large equipment that your small business will need. If so, does your home have another extra room available to hold inventory. Does it have a garage or a basement to hold the large equipment.

If there is not enough space, then the house will not be conducive to starting a small business.

If the Small Business You are Starting Conducive to Being Run from Your Home?

If your small business will require foot traffic from customers, then starting it in your home might not be a good idea.

If your small business requires a visible location because your target market is a walk in customer base and your house is in a residential area on a dead end street, then the business if not conducive to being started in your home.

If the business is dangerous in anyway or if the clients that your small business will cater to are not the type of people that you want around your family and children, then the business is not conducive to being started in your home. A good example of this would be a Private Investigator. Especially if you have children, you business might not be conducive to being run from your home.
