Mom's Home Business is Everyone's Home Business

Mom's Home Based Business is a Family Matter
Work at home Moms know that if they want their business to be successful, they must have the commitment and support of all those that live in the home.
That means dads, kids, in-laws, and pets. A professional work, phone, e-mail, and video conferencing environment will be essential to your success. No client will appreciate a conversation that is interrupted by interjections such as "Put that down, Not now I'm on the phone! " Neither will Fido's yelps be appreciated as you try to capture the client's order information - Fido may make this client's order their last.
Mum's the Word for Mom's Home Business
You must establish clear quiet times. That means setting up a schedule that you, your spouse, and the kids can live with. Children, especially small ones will not be able to keep quiet and busy for hours on end. Focus your calls and external interactions during times that you know the children will either be busy, out of the house, of God willing, asleep. If you can do your business during Dad's time at home, then he must understand the importance of keeping you focused on your work.
Mom's time at home working on the home is different than Mom's time focused on her home business. Make sure that everyone understands the difference and set up signals and a schedule to ensure that the message is always clear.
Mom's Work Space - Crayons and Markers Allowed!
While professionals working in an office may not understand this, working Mom's are the first to tell you that kids need to be around them. That means that Mom's office area may need to be part play / part work. Try to set up a work space that can be shared with your kids (during those times that you are not speaking with a client, of course). Kids love being close to their Moms. And, to be honest, aren't we working from home because we want to be there for them?
So, find a work space where your computer and their crafts can find equal time. When you are doing research, typing up orders, or packing mail items, let them be there! You get your work done and they can share their Monet masterpieces with you. Sure, there will be interruptions and there will be times when you need them to do something else because you need to concentrate. But, don't forget the whole reason for being at home.
Find time for them to be your office help and they'll remember it always.
Mom's Home Business Paycheck - a Bonus for the Kids
If you can share a small portion of your paycheck with the kids, they'll understand the rewards that come with supporting Mom's work at home business. Speak to them about how many hours you need to work per week, how they can help support Mom's home business, and show them financial rewards for their participation. For example, if they are quiet during your phone calls - they should earn rewards (whether financial or a special one-on-one time with Mom).
Keep a record of their support and their infractions. Discuss it with them - show them what a big help they are. Then reward them! I personally give my husband a 10% cut of my pay as a thank you for his help with the kids. I give my children kudos via special privileges or KB Toy trips when possible. All employees deserve recognition. Most of all, don't forget to thank yourself! Mom's Home Business is nothing without you!
