ISLE

Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Separated from Timor by a 10 km wide strait navigable
by prahu 2-3 hours from Kupang harbor. (Or fly with
Merpati, Rp7500.) Because of monsoonal turbulence during
July and Aug., this strait is called the 'Grave of the
Rotinese'. Roti is a densely populated island whose
overflow lives in Kupang lone third of Kupang is Rotinesel.
The lighter-skinned Rotinese have had longer contact
with western Indonesia and are agriculturally, educationally
and politically more sophisticated than the Timorese.
Their myths say that the present inhabitants of Roti
stem from Ceram in the Moluccas Islands to the north.
The Rotinese were keen allies with the Dutch, accepting
Christianity and even fought some battles for them against
the rebellious natives. Covered in palm savannahs, this
island is geologically and climatically much the same
as Timor. crafts: The Rotinese musical instrument, sesando,
is like a bamboo zither with 10-36 copper strings and
a hemispheric resonator made of nipah palm. Decorated
antique axes with cast handles and blades are products
of the Bronze Age; the date of theirorigin in Roti is
unknown.
