Most Small Business Owners Will Need Financing at Some Point in the Life of the Small Business

Whether for start up costs or, later, expansion, most people will need to seek some form of financing for their small business.

Their are several different financing sources you can explore for your small business. Which one is best for you will depend on the amount of money needed by the business as well as your resources and limitation.

The first place that most people turn when they need financing for their small business is themselves. Many small businesses are funded by the business owners personal savings.

Be careful not to use all of your personal reserve as financing for your small business.

When you do not have the resources available that your small business needs, the next common place to look is friends and family members. Sometimes those who believe in you and believe in your small business, are willing to make a financial investment. However, as we all know, you should always use caution when exploring this option for financing. A business gone bad can be trying for investors especially when those people are your family and friends.

And just like you should not use all of your money in your business, you should never ask friends and family to invest who would be putting their family finances in peril.

Where Do You Go from There for Small Business Financing?

Another resource that small business owners will draw on for business financing is credit cards. This is often used because they are relatively easy to get. However, you want to be careful when choosing this type of financing for your small business as interest rates are typically higher than most other forms of financing.

Others have obtained small business financing by taking a Home Equity Loan. Interest rates for this kind of loan are typically lower than other financing options and the interest is fully deductible for the first $100, 000 borrowed. Risk involved here is that you could loose your house if you can't pay the loan back.

Banks and lending institutions will sometimes extend small business loans a means of financing for your business. However, small business loans, especially for a start up business, can be hard to get. You should find them somewhat easier to get for financing expansion of your small business after you can show an income with the business.

Another Key Resource for Small Business Financing is the Small Business Administration

The Small Business Administration is a US Government sponsored program that provides assistance to small business in many aspects. One of the things that they can do is assist you in obtaining financing for your small business, typically through a small business loan.

The Small Business Administration does not usually loan money directly to small business. But they will "guarantee" a small business loan for you through a banking institution. This is similar to co-signing a loan. It will make it much easier for your small business to obtain a bank loan as it greatly increases the banks chance of getting their money back.
