Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

If
you're heading east, take a truck direct to Atambua,
a 200 km trip on really terrible roads; Rp1500-2000.
At about the halfway point is Kefannanu where there
are 2 losmens. The best is Losmen Beringen, Rp750 double;
also serves food. The finest rugs in West Timor are
sold in Kefannanu. From Kefannanu to Atambua, there
may be few trucks so you might have to wait or walk
(takes 2 days); a truck costs Rp500. by boat: A major
dock city. Bear in mind that boat fares aren't fixed
and you must haggle with the captain. There are many
ships heading west but much fewer going east. Ask around
Kupang harbor for missionary planes or for a mission
boat named Stella Maris bound for Surabaya via the island
of Alor. Barges travel fairly frequently from Kupang
to Ende, Flores, Rp5000. Also from Kupang to Waingapu,
Sumba, Rp5000, 250 km. The ship Ratu Rosari calls in
Kupang every 3 weeks or so, heading back and forth from
Surabaya. Or you can take the ship Permate along the
northern route from Kupang to: Atapupu, Kalabahi, Larantuka,
Maumere, Reo, Bima, Sumbawa Besar, Ampenan- 9 days in
all, Rp15,000. For the 'southern tour', take the ship
Boger from Kupang to: Ende, Waingapu, Weido, Labuhanbajo,
Bima, Sumbawa Baser, for around Rp10,000. But these
go by very loose schedules, departing once every 2-3
weeks, and are slow since the copra is all loaded by
hand. If there's no copra to be picked up in a given
port the ship just bypasses it. alternative route: A
roundabout way to island-hop west is to ask agents,
captains, crews, and custom officials in Kupang for
a kapal motor to Ujung Pandang, South Celebes; Rp9-12,000,
takes 2-3 days. Buginese prahus also trade at Naikliu,
a Rotinese settlement on the northwest coast of Indonesian
Timor; possibly catch a prahu to South Celebes from
there too. flights: Merpati fares to: Denpasar, Rp27,500;
Alor, Rp12,350; Ende (Flores), Rp14,500; Surabaya, Rp33,500;
Ruteng, Rp18,000; Waingapu (Sumba), Rp2t,150. Check
out Zamrud fares as well, might be cheaper.
