Volunteer OpportunitiesLooking for a way to help your community?If you have ever wanted to help make a difference in a park or at a recreation facility, then there is a place specifically for you in the Park and Recreation Department. Each year hundreds of volunteers made up of all ages and abilities come to parks, recreation facilities and offices throughout the city to help with a number of enriching programs and special events.Many volunteers come to help as part of a group, from a company, an office or a club. Many volunteers are students at the high school and college level. All students who need credit for completing volunteer work, should know that our staff will gladly verify your volunteer hours. And who knows? Maybe after you have completed your assignment, you will stay! What do volunteers do?
Volunteers are considered "un-paid staff" and perform a number of duties including:
What if you want to help in your own community?Volunteers can be found on recreation councils, also known as "rec councils" throughout the city. These volunteers donate their time to attend monthly meetings where decisions are made concerning area specific needs regarding programs, activities and special events. Rec council volunteers also help as program leaders at playground sites, as coaches on courts and ball fields, as camp counselors during summer and spring breaks, and more. Call the rec center nearest you for more information on their rec council. Can a volunteer "Adopt a Park?"Individuals and groups can adopt parks through the "Adopt A Park" program.
