Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research

Opportunities exist for scientists from UK and non-UK institutes to undertake collaborative research for periods of up to a year at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, one of the world's leading centres for climate research. The Hadley Centre also provides an ideal focus for interaction with other UK scientists from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts, University of Reading, Southampton Oceanography Centre, University of Oxford, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Wallingford and Imperial College.

Research themes

The Hadley Centre programme is an integration of the 16 themes listed below. Applicants to the Visiting Scientist Programme may propose a topic of study covering one or more of the research themes. It is desirable, though not essential, that draft proposals are discussed with relevant scientists within the Hadley Centre before a formal application is made. Contact names for the themes are listed on the application form, which is available from hadley@metoffice.gov.uk.

Criteria for selection

The number of visiting scientist positions is limited - successful applicants will propose imaginative, specific and achievable research that will make a significant contribution to both climate research and the achievement of Hadley Centre goals. Applicants are usually expected to have research degree in maths or physics and a record of a research experience and achievement in a relevant subject. Applications are evaluated by the Hadley Centre Management Committee, which meets monthly.

Costs

The Met Office will contribute towards the cost of return travel from the visiting scientist's home institute, plus an allowance to cover living expenses. Scientists are assumed to remain salaried members of their home institutes. The Visiting Scientist Programme does not cover the living and travel costs of spouse and/or dependants.
