Beaches in Trang

Beaches on Palian coastline: Sea tour at Palian district is recommended by taking the Trang-Palian Road (Highway No.404). The Palian coastline is lovely, indicative of the extraordinary feature of Andaman Sea. The famous beaches include Chao Samran and Ta Sae. Also, this is the beginning point for getting to most islands in the other areas by taking a boat ride at Palian port, locally known as Takam.

Chao Mai Beach: Chao Mai Beach is included within the area of Hat Chao Mai National Park. It is the most attractive and popular main land beach near Trang's city, 50 kilometers away from town. It lies on the stretched- 5 kilometer- long beach with its powdery sand and clear water reflecting the blue sky above. Rows of swaying casuarinas trees lining at the back of the beach give shades for relaxation while the elliptical bay facing the beach provides uninterrupted views across to Ko Libong, the idyllic island. At the base of principal mountain is a 30-meter cavern, Chao Mai Cave where houses the wondrous stalactites which form a seeming theatre; a high overhead wall stretches out like a roof over the "stage", and at the sides there are layers which look like a curtain.

The beach is easy to get access to by different ways. The first way is taking a bus from Kantang Road to the port town of Kantang, then take a ferry-ride across the narrow bay to a small pier. After that, you can take a chartered songtao (a local bus) leaving regularly from the pier. Otherwise, you can get to the beach via Pakmeng beach by chartering songtaos down the coast. This is an expensive option unless you can join a group of other passengers.

Apart from easy accessibility to the beach, Chao Mai Beach can be also visited all year round even in the monsoon period as the beach is protected from the storm by the enormous limestone mountains.

Pakmeng Beach: Pakmeng is the closest beach, only 38 kilometers from town. The beach is outstanding for its mountain in the middle of which the shape resembles to a reclining man. The beach itself is composed of off-white sand and shards of coral, and the shallow bay is paved with sharp shells, making it not a good place for strolling or swimming. The mediocre sand is compensated for, however, by the remarkably wonderful panorama over a sapphire sea punctuated by towering limestone mountains. Each year, in early November, residents from Trang come to the beach to collect sweet-fleshed hoy tapao, a kind of delicious oyster during the Collecting Festival.

Had Yao Beach (Long Beach): The beach stretches 5 kilometers long with wide beaches lined with food stores and public water wells for all tourists. The water here is very deep and the waves are strong, swimming is not recommended, but due to its broad beach, it is good for camping. However, the color of local life style is compensated for that. On the confluence of a canal, there are villages wherein people still follow their smoothly simple lifestyle. On the bank of the canal, you can see women and children busily taking the flesh off the crabs. Every morning, men take their boats loaded with fresh sea food to the shores for selling to visitors.

Chang Lang Beach: This long deserted stretch of sands is the seat of Hat Chao Mai National Park Headquarters. The beach is dominated by a limestone cliff riddled with small caves, and the bay is lined by the casuarinas, allowing it a good location for camping. Campsites are also plentiful here. From here, there are long-tail boats transferring to Koh Muk.

Yonglin Beach to Short Beach: The curved beach parallels the pine forest. At the end of the beach stands a high mountain with caves that are interconnected to each other, providing a shelter for camping. You can also find the strange appearance of trees here. The beach is ideal for swimming and secluded relaxation due to its tranquil atmosphere.

Samran Beach: Situated about 59 kilometers from the city, Samran Beach lies along the coast of Indian Ocean fringed by a thick pine forest. The delicate sandy beaches together with the pines' shadow make the beach a great place for relaxing. From here, you get a good view of large and small islands offshore. The climate is warm with a cozy breeze all day, making it the great spot for holiday. Visitors can also taste fresh sea food and experience the life of local fishermen here. Additionally, at the low tide, you can walk along the beach and reach the islands ahead: Sukorn, Petra, Laorieng , and Libong Islands. If you are lucky, you may see schools of dolphins jumping in the water in the morning.
