Help Us Keep FDR on the Dime!

The March of Dimes is deeply saddened by the recent passing of President Ronald Reagan. President and Mrs. Reagan have been long time supporters of the March of Dimes and we hope there will be a fitting tribute to his life and contribution to the nation. However, we join Mrs. Reagan in respectfully requesting that President Reagan’s profile not replace President Franklin D Roosevelt’s on the dime. The FDR dime has deep symbolic meaning for our organization and for the millions of Americans who volunteer in their communities.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency founded in 1938 by President Roosevelt to conquer polio.  Historical fact sheets published by the U.S. Mint note that FDR’s “portrait appears on the dime to commemorate his ardent support for the March of Dimes.” Far more than commemorating a president, the dime serves as a powerful reminder of how Americans struggled together in the 1950s to overcome a devastating disease through the collaboration of scientists, clinicians, parents, and members of the business community.

Today, the March of Dimes continues its historic work to improve the health of mothers, infants and children by preventing prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality. And to this day, schoolchildren across America still save their dimes and send them to the March of Dimes with the understanding that even one person – and even a small contribution – can make a difference in the lives and health of others. It would be a shame to lose the FDR dime as the symbol of this spirit of volunteerism.

Please call or write your Representative and ask that he or she oppose any effort to remove FDR from the dime. Your Representative can be reached through the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 225-3121 or visit the U.S. House of Representatives Web site  to obtain the address for your Representative.
