HIPAA Security Regulations

The department of Health and Human Services released the final
HIPAA security rules on February 20th, 2003. These standards
establish protections for certain electronic health information. The
effective date for the regulations is April 21, 2005.
Under the rules, covered entity security efforts must:
- Ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and
availability of all electronic protected health information the
covered entity creates, receives, maintains, or transmits.
- Protect against any reasonably anticipated
threats or hazards to the security or integrity of such
information.
- Protect against any reasonably anticipated uses
or disclosures of such information that are not permitted or
required.
- Ensure workforce compliance
