Brattleboro: A Vibrant CommunityBrattleboro enjoys an enviable position as a town within easy reach of some of the most exciting and dynamic economic, educational, and cultural centers in the world. Located about halfway between New York and Montreal, and about two and a half hours from Boston, in Brattleboro you're never far from the energy and opportunity of the big cities. Although the business and cultural heart of Brattleboro beats just three miles from the SIT campus, the spirit of this progressive and stimulating community pervades all its neighborhoods—in-town and in the surrounding hills. Home to an eclectic mix of native Vermonters and people who've relocated from all over the country—urbanite and country folk as well—this cosmopolitan town of 12,000 serves as southeastern Vermont's undisputed cultural, recreational, and economic center. Indeed, for all its services, amenities and cultural offerings, Brattleboro has surely earned its position as number five in Norm Crampton's "The 100 Best Small Towns in America." Downtown, easy for strolling, shopping, and relaxing, is home to an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants, and SIT students are quick to pick up on the wealth of what Brattleboro has to offer. Probably no town its size offers more book and music stores or art galleries than Brattleboro. Surely, no town its size is home to a food co-op nearly as good (it's an award winner), restaurants of such variety and quality, and cultural goings on as varied and excellent. They say you can tell a lot about a town by its public library. Brattleboro's Brooks Memorial Library ranks among Vermont's top institutions for information, for service, as a venue for meetings and presentations, and for linking up with information resources all over the country. Writers and poets, musicians—from classical to pop to folk to rock—dancers, and actors contribute to a cultural and intellectual scene that is rich with performance and lively discussion throughout the year. The restored theater on Main Street, along with the newer cineplex north of town (on the way to SIT), keeps Brattleboro on the cutting edge of "what's playing at the movies"—blockbuster and small film alike. The world-renowned Brattleboro Music Center, the Brattleboro Museum & Arts Center, and a variety of local theater, music and discussion groups add to Brattleboro's reputation as a magnet for artists and thinkers. Surrounding hamlets Putney, Guilford, and Marlboro play their part in this lively cultural and intellectual scene. If it's sports and the outdoors you're after, Brattleboro is a hub for skiing, hiking, river rafting, canoeing and kayaking, and lots of other active pursuits. SIT students can enjoy some of these right on the SIT campus, or for wider horizons, make the short trip to the nearby mountains and rivers that cut through and surround the town. SIT is very much part of the Brattleboro community, providing a mecca for education and cultural events. The International Center and Rotch Learning Center draw people from surrounding regions to lively day and evening presentations, with speakers from all over the country and the world addressing local, national, and international issues of concern to all. Add to all this some of the finest chocolates, coffees, and microbrews in the world—all made right here in Brattleboro—and you'll find Brattleboro to be a wonderful home away from home during your stay at SIT.
